Happy New Year! Prune bush roses within the next two weeks, or by mid-February at the latest, but hold off on pruning climbers until after they bloom in spring. For bush roses, first cut the bush down halfway then completely remove all the foliage to reduce springtime diseases. Cut out dead and weak canes, and try to open the center so the remaining canes radiate out in a bowl shape, if possible. Finally, reduce the overall height to 12 inches for lower- growing types, and 15-20 inches for higher-growing types. Prune and feed deciduous fruit trees. Cut back the top at whatever height you want down to eight feet, and thin out branches from the middle of the tree so sunlight can filter through. More than thirty students from Nicholas Getschman's AP environmental science class at East High School joined members of the Memphis Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of America, to plant 26 magnolia trees around their school's campus. As part of the Garden Club of America Centennial Tree Project, 26 magnolias were propagated by Dale Skaggs, director of horticulture at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, and repotted last spring by the garden club members.
