Both attorneys said that, while they always look for alternatives to bankruptcy filing for their clients, sometimes this is the best course to take and, in their minds, almost always a better option than many of the debt-reduction programs being advertised on the radio and late-night television. Summing up the current landscape, Katz and Gogel said that a number of factors, from mounting debts to soaring mortgage payments; from plummeting home equity to sharp declines in consumer confidence and spending, conspired to put many consumers and business owners in vulnerable financial situations.

A Vinton man is suing three out-of-state companies that he says prey on Virginians with debt problems.
In a lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Roanoke, Johnny Quesenberry said that Genesis Financial Solutions Inc., Asset Acceptance Capital Corp., and Access Acceptance LLC -- all chartered in Delaware, though based in Oregon and Michigan -- tempt potential customers with mailings that offer credit cards and assistance lowering debt. Interestingly, most of these same Republicans are pushing to reduce taxes on the wealthy by 30 percent, while demanding a reduction of the nations debt burden by cutting or eventually eliminating Social Security, Medicare and other programs that help working families, the poor and the elderly. If I recall my Bible studies, Jesus threw the money changers from the temple and gave loaves and fishes, not to mention love and hope, to the poor not the other way around. So it seems for many important Republican figures, hypocrisy is the new Christianity.

WASHINGTON - Four prominent deficit-cutters told Congress' bipartisan super-committee on Tuesday that they should raise revenues and make major changes to expensive health programs on their way to a debt-reduction compromise that should exceed their $1.2 trillion, 10-year mandate.
But in an indication of the partisan divisions that have stalled the evenly divided panel, lawmakers on the committee spent much of their time touting their own plans for mopping up red ink and sparking the economy.
