Like those films, L'[Enfant]'s greatest triumph is inserting viewers into the hopelessness and desperate scramble to survive that define the lives of its characters-who are young, poor, homeless residents of the bleak Belgian steel town of Seraing. L'Enfant, which received the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or in 2005, is a glimpse into lives defined by the kind of quotidian despair that has settled so deeply into its characters' bones, it has become second nature.
Eighteen-year-old Sonia (Déborah François) wanders the frigid, merciless streets of Seraing clutching her 9-day-old son, Jimmy, to her chest. Sonia's ultimate quest is not for shelter but for the baby's 20-year-old father, Bruno Jérémie Renier), an endearing but seemingly conscienceless petty thief.
Bruno is a kind of Fagin wit...

.(Sony Classics; 91 minutes; R; 2005). Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, the fraternal filmmakers behind Rosetta and La Promesse (The Promise), serve as writers-directors for this subtitled heartbreaker. In the Belgian town of Seraing, 18-year-old waif Sonia (Deborah Francois) leaves the maternity ward with her newborn son Jimmy. She reunites with her boyfriend Bruno (Jeremie Renier), a small-potatoes thief who is something of a Fagin for a small troupe of teen burglars and fences their stolen goods.

L'ENFANT (THE CHILD) -- *** -- Jeremie Renier, Deborah Francois, Jeremie Segard; in French, with English subtitles; rated R (violence, profanity, brief sex).
The title of "L'Enfant (The Child)" refers as much to the irresponsible main character, Bruno (Jeremie Renier), as it does to the child he has fathered.

'Paranormal Activity 2' (Paramount Pictures)
These second helpings usually don't work out. For "Paranormal Activity 2," expectations had to be low, considering the teaming of a new director (Tod Williams) and screenwriter (Michael R. Perry). Williams and Perry were tabbed to follow up the outstanding success of the 2007 picture, and, surprisingly, they achieved their goals. "Paranormal Activity 2" followed its predecessor closely at the box office, and, speaking of quality, it was on par. The film was no better or worse than "Paranormal Activity," and that's it's greatest weak point. It didn't add anything to the franchise, following the frightful recipe of the original. Sure, "Paranormal Activity 2" offers the same edge-of-you-seat anticipation, but, despite the addition of...

THE PAGE TURNER -- ** 1/2 -- Deborah Francois, Catherine Frot; in French, with English subtitles; not rated, probable PG-13 (violence, brief sex, brief gore, brief drugs).
A "page-turner" is a book so good -- or at least so diverting -- that it defies you to put it down before you finish it. And like such a book, the mostly diverting French import "The Page Turner" is briskly paced.
