Dennis Skillicorn would be the first to acknowledge he has made many dreadful mistakes. So, too, would Missouri officials be committing a tragic blunder if they execute him as planned on Aug. 27. The Missouri Board of Probation and Parole should recommend Gov. Matt Blunt commute his death sentence, and the governor should heed such sound advice for at least two significant reasons. Jake Heggie's opera is based on the personal account of a nun, Helen Prejean, as she worked to assist a death row inmate in Angola, Louisiana's State Penitentiary. Capital punishment, its pros, cons, issues and impacts completely occupied the lengthy musical outpouring of powerful voices, creditable acting and clever staging, conveyed on a complex score that challenged musicians and listeners alike.
Their flyer pointed out that, "Of the more than 230 death row prisoners in Pennsylvania, almost 70 percent are people of color." In a state in which the Black population is merely 10 percent, that statistic is staggering in its implications....
