CLAREMONT Police catch car dealer tire theft suspect
Dear Tom and Ray: My friend has a fancy-shmancy 2007 BMW 3 Series. Recently, one of his tires blew out through the sidewall and left a gaping, scary-looking hole. That tire and the other three all have plenty of tread, so the blow-out seems troubling to me. He took it to the dealer, who told him: (1) All of his tires need to be replaced ASAP, because the same thing probably will happen to them soon; (2) he shouldn't have Goodyear tires of any kind because they're no good for this particular car; and (3) the only tires he ever should put on it are the model and brand they have at the dealership, which cost about $160 each, plus installation. He doesn't do any racing or any crazy driving - he just drives normally. I'm convinced they're trying to pressure him into buying four of the most e...
LOS ANGELES, March 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A California Superior Court jury awarded $18 million to a Monrovia family who lost their 11-year-old son in a rollover caused by the catastrophic failure of an aged, recalled Firestone Tire. The jury found that American Tire Depot was negligent for installing the 12-year-old spare despite its recall status and Firestone inspection guidelines against using tires more than 10 years of age. On May 24, 2006, Willie Moreno was the rear seat passenger in a Ford Explorer driven by his brother, Ramon Moreno Jr., when the left rear tire experienced a catastrophic tread separation on California Highway 15 in Riverside County, CA. Willie, who was wearing his seatbelt, was partially ejected in the rollover crash and died of massive head injuries.

Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 2002 Honda CRV with 5,000 miles on it. I recently took my car to Honda for its yearly maintenance. They changed my oil and rotated my tires. Now my car is vibrating whenever I drive above 35 mph. I took it back and they balanced the tires. This helped a little, but I still feel the vibration. Now I've resolved not to rotate my tires ever again. But what can I do to solve this problem? Gunes
If your tire pressure is low, you have a 25-percent chance of guessing which one. The federal government requires that all automakers equip new cars with tire-pressure monitors. There are two types. One uses a sensor at each wheel to measure the precise pressure. It's more expensive than the other one, which signals the driver if one wheel is turning at a slower speed than the others. This version, which is more common, doesn't tell you which tire is low. In most cases, the low-tire pressure light can only be reset by the dealer.
