MONTICELLO It was clear on Tuesday evening that residents here do not want their local school closed. And SAD 29 board members, concerned they did not have enough data yet to make an informed decision, agreed to wait another year before taking any action. During the nearly four-hour special board meeting held at the pre- kindergarten through third grade Wellington School, the board voted to end discussions about the future of the school for at least the 2011-2012 school year.
MONTICELLO - Tucked at the end of a narrow street off the center of town, it is easy to forget that the tiny Wellington School actually exists. But to the people who live in this southern Aroostook County village, it really is the heart of the community, a place where kids play and receive an education and where a number of civic events are held. All of that could change if figures show that it could be more cost-effective for the district to close the pre-kindergarten through third grade school. SAD 29 school board members earlier this week gave Superintendent Ray Freve the go-ahead to gather data to illustrate the financial impact of shuttering the school and busing students elsewhere.
NEW SHARON -- Wellington "Duke" Ramsey, 92, passed away peacefully on July 16, with loving family singing and praying by his side. Duke was born April 18, 1919, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., the son of Herbert Marseilles and Bessie Laura (Light) Ramsey. He graduate in 1941 from Cornell University, with a degree in chemical engineering, earned the nickname of "Deacon" by his Psi Upsilon fraternity brothers because of his regular church attendance and was the captain of the varsity basketball team his senior year.
BLUFFTON, S.C. - Wellington Harrill Lewis, known to many as "Wimpy," died at his home in Bluffton, S.C. on Dec. 30, 2010 of complications from Park- inson's disease. He was 91. Wellington Lewis was born in Fallston, N.C., on June 30, 1919, the son of John C. and Georgia Lewis. After graduating from Fallston High School, he worked his way through the University of North Carolina where he earned six varsity letters in track and cross country. He was a member of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Grail. Upon graduation with a B.S. in commerce, he was commissioned in the Navy in April of 1942, and served as a supply officer on the USS Smith (DD-378) in the Pacific during World War II. A Manor Township man who claimed in October that he was kidnapped from his home at gunpoint is facing charges as a result of the incident. Police said Gary W. Long, 62, of 101 Wellington Road, lied when he told police that two Hispanic men entered his apartment Oct. 28, brandished a gun and forced him from the home.
