Since today happens to be International Women's Day, it's also worth mentioning what Secretary [Hillary Rodham Clinton] and Ambassador Rice and this administration are doing on behalf of women around the globe. We lifted what's called the global gag rule that restricted women's access to family planning services abroad. We're pursuing a global health strategy that makes important investments in child and maternal health.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of Metro Youth Day, this year's Youth Day Scholarship Reception will launch a new dimension for Youth Day on Belle Isle, "Metro Youth Speak Out." Traditionally kids spend the day having fun, enjoying games and refreshments. This year a Youth Dialogue will he added to give young people an opportunity to speak out about issues of concern to them, such as cultural diversity, crime, how they view these problems and hope to improve the situations.
Our goal is to raise more than $50,000 to provide scholarships to metro Detroit Youth," said [Ed Deeb]. "We want to encourage them to pursue academics and a college education. At the very least, we can reduce them financial burdens for children who can't afford to go to school.

MACHIAS - The University of Maine at Machias, along with Aramark Dining Services and the Student Senate, will hold a Veterans Day reception at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Portside Room of Kimball Hall.
Members of the public are invited to join in celebrating the dedicated service of local veterans. There will be a display of photos, news articles, and other memorabilia provided by members of the community.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg recently hosted a reception at Gracie Mansion to celebrate The 40th Anniversary of the West Indian-American Day Carnival and Parade. The parade is a Labor Day tradition that began in Harlem in the early 1920s and moved to Brooklyn in the mid 1960s. Today, it is the largest West Indian festival and parade in the United States with over three million people. from numerous countries participating each year. Mayor Bloomberg also announced the re-naming of the netball courts in Lincoln Terrace Park, Brooklyn, in memory of Carlos Lezama.
