BOGOTA, Colombia - Mardy Fish defeated Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6- 3, 7-5, 4-6, 8-6 on Sunday to give the United States an insurmountable 3-1 lead over Colombia in the Davis Cup. Winning the playoff match on outdoor red clay means the U.S. will remain in the World Group, the top tier of the Davis Cup. Colombia was trying to qualify for the first time.
Utah's Amber Alert program has gotten a $5,300 boost in funding from a booster group for the Davis Chamber of Commerce. The Davis Chamber of Commerce Women in Business raised and donated $5,320 to help fund training materials for law enforcement agencies on the Amber Alert, which is issued whenever a child is believed to have been abducted. The Utah Attorney General's Office admits that its budget for the Amber Alert program is nearly empty. The training is often funded through donations from businesses and individuals.
Work by Dayton artist Willis "Bing" Davis recently was highlighted during "Culture, Commerce, and Community: Museums and Historical Commemoration. The Association of African American Museums 2011 Conference representatives chose three visual arts projects for presentation. On Aug. 3-6 in Tallahassee, Fla. Davis' four-year exhibit was honored, along with the Smithsonian Institute and Dr. Margaret Burroughs, founder of the DuSable Museum in Chicago.
