The prospect of Yacolts three full-time workers joining a local union remains in limbo, officials said last week, almost three months after the union formally offered its services. Teamsters Local 58 and Yacolt Pro-Tem Dave Hancock exchanged letters in late March about the possibility of the union group representing town employees. However, no action has been taken on the suggestion since then due to turnover in the towns administration, Hancock said.

Following the Friday reunion of Hancock and [Wayne Shorter], the next week will feature Herbie Hancock performing with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Both Hancock and DeJohnette are natives of Chicago and their foundation in jazz began in the Windy City. During the appearances of these modern jazz virtuosos (Hancock, pianist, Holland, bass and DeJohnette drums), they are expected to bring to the Symphony Center evidence of their professionalism in the genre of jazz. When Shorter joined the [Miles Davis] quintet, the group began to grow because Wayne was a real composer," Davis said. Songs or tunes that Shorter wrote when he was with Davis were "Footprints," "ESP," "Nefertiti," "Pinocchio," and "Deloris," which became historical works of jazz.
Here's a tip of the cyclist's helmet to Dave Norwood of Ellsworth and every other hale, hearty and determined soul who will be joining him Saturday, June 4, on the 85 miles of the Sunrise Trail from Washington Junction in Hancock to Ayers Junction in Pembroke to raise funds for Downeast Health Services. Dave is just one of the many people who will participate in this event known as Folks on Spokes that supports the work of the organization serving residents of Hancock and Washington counties through its offices in Ellsworth, Calais and Machias.
NEW YORK - Singing a mix of operatic tunes and sweeping ballads has been a successful formula for Josh Groban: since the 25-year- old made his debut six years ago he has sold millions of albums with his soaring voice and classical-crossover sound. But Groban decided to tinker with the formula on his latest album, "Awake." He collaborated with the likes of Dave Matthews and Herbie Hancock, and used African rhythms on some songs, even adding the harmonies of South African acts like Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Two weekends at Orchestra Hall jazz buffs witnessed prodigious technicians providing audiences with the varying elements and idioms of jazz. For the first week, featured artists included Herbie Hancock, pianist; with special guest Wayne Shorter, saxophone; Gary Thomas, saxophone and flute; Scott Colley, bass and Terri Lyne Carrington, drums. During the second week the instrumentalists were jazz giants Herbie Hancock, piano, Dave Holland, bass and Jack DeJohnette, drums. Just as we were intimately familiar with the musical development of Herbie Hancock in his youth, Jack DeJohnette is remembered keeping company with the young aspiring musicians while hanging around the skating rink that opened for a while at State and 70th St. He too learned many of his "chops" right here in his hometown...
MILES DAVIS; "The Complete 'On the Corner' Sessions" (Columbia/ Legacy) *** 1/2 In 1972, jazz great Davis released "On the Corner," a decidedly more funk-oriented album than his usual fare. With such session players as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Dave Lebman, Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson and Al Foster, Davis experimented with his trumpet, grooves and tape loops. Gleaned from 6 1/2 hours of studio work this six-CD set includes two hours of previously unreleased material, and uncut and unedited masters, featuring "One and One," "Rated X" and the album's title track. The doodles and meanderings will attract fans and jazz enthusiasts, but some of the music flows into the tedious. -- Scott Iwasaki
