Drawing upon a cultural studies perspective, this study investigates the audience role in shaping corporate involvement in social issues - identified as cause-related corporate outreach. We assert that, more than consumer, voter, or passive receptor of corporate messages, the audience is an active participant in the communication process. This case study of the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, one of the most visible fitness-based fundraising events, examines the meaning individual participants construct during their involvement in the event. The study provides a context in which public relations practitioners and scholars alike can better understand the role corporate communication plays in defining and preserving community and social values. This understanding can help corporations buil...

Transnational Mexican migrants are the largest farm labor force in the United States. Problem drinking among their ranks is drawing increased public attention and concern in their new U.S. communities, but there is scant research that specifically addresses alcohol use among this population of migrants. The research on Mexican American migrants, other migrants, Mexicans, and farmworkers in general is reviewed to identify etiological factors and data collection methods for future research on drinking among transnational Mexican migrants. This research reveals that situational factors (i.e., social isolation and peer influence) are highly associated with problem drinking among these migrants. It also demonstrates that binational ethnographic field methods are needed to study this "hidden"...

Through technological advancements in data sharing and data analysis -- such as link analysis, data visualization, predictive modeling and other analytics -- insurers today can anticipate, detect and prosecute fraud more quickly and forcefully. And every dollar invested in fighting fraud can return significant savings to the bottom line. Along with data collection and analytic methods to identify potential fraud, insurers can use technology to improve claims work-flow. Such advances help in managing claims investigations more quickly and effectively. Technology is also helping underwriters confirm information to reduce policy application fraud. One essential ingredient to combat misrepresentation at the underwriting stage is to catch inconsistencies between what the applicant reports an...

The first Christmas Bird Count took place in 1900, and the Breeding Bird Survey began in the 1960s. While these require more or less rigorous scientific data collection methods, the Great Backyard Bird Count is more user friendly. It requires only that an observer report what he or she sees in a given area at any time over a four- day weekend in late winter.
The 12th Great Backyard Bird Count was held all over North America Feb. 13-16. It is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Cornell Information Technologies and Wild Birds Unlimited.

The main purpose of this research is to study the adoption of ABC as an overhead costing system among manufacturing organizations in Malaysia. The stages of adoption and seven factors expected3 to influence ABC adoption are derived from previous studies in similar research area. This study uses two methods of data collection, a survey and a case study. The study shows that 36 percent of the organizations are ABC adopters while the remaining 64 percent are non-adopters. The regression analysis performed on the data showed that three factors which are decision usefulness, organization support, and internal measures had significant influence on ABC while the other four factors namely cost, IT, training, and learning and growth were not found to be of any significant influence. A case study...
