  • Naddy talks about Mahmoud Darwish's poems, which exemplify the sense of cryptic playfulness that Darwish tried always to create. • One of the sharpest statements by a writer in our time is "The White Whale" by E.L. Doctorow, a keynote address by the author of "Ragtime, "The Waterworks" and "City of God" that was given to members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society in April 2007: Just as Moby-Dick was too much for Ahab," said Doctorow, "our new century may be too difficult for us to comprehend." He mentioned the president's invasion of Iraq, "how badly it has gone, bumblingly and tragically ruinous, with so many lives destroyed," as an example of what that can mean. To explain, he invoked the term "quantum locality." "As I understand the term and make metaphorical use of it, electrons shot from an atom will mirror one another no matter how far apart they are driven." ...

From Amiri Baraka to Patricia Smith to the N.O.M.A.D.S., poetry, spoken word, and hip-hop are embodied in "Poets For Palestine." Other poets in the book include the late Mahmoud Darwish, Naomi Shihab Nye, Suheir Hammad, Nathalie Handal, E....
