A year ago at this time, Columbia Dance was preparing for its spring show in a rented Heights strip mall, with several buckets and rags placed strategically around the studio to catch the rainwater dripping through the leaky roof.
Washington State Ballet was moving its annual production from Portland to Vancouver, only to have a storm blow into town, without the Skyview High School auditorium thermostat being adjusted properly. Since no one on site could figure out how to turn up the heat, the company had to perform in air so cold that much of the audience wore jackets.

Speculative, experimental performances such as Gutierrez's make up an important part of the ADF experience for students because they leaven the festival's mainstream main stage offerings each season. Their function as counterbalance is particularly required since the school inexplicably has no input into the festival's main stage selections, although its tuition makes up a significant part of the festival's budget every year, and its dean, Donna Faye Burchfield, is clearly a dance visionary in her own right.
Produced on a shoestring with negligible tech support, concerts like teachers/choreographers Jennifer Nugent and Paul Matteson's earlier showing this year and Ann Livingston Young's memorable American Crane Standards in 2003 demonstrate, at their best, imagination and choreographic ...

Pittsburgh's vibrant dance scene is built upon local artistry and eminent touring groups -- both of which present uncommonly appealing lineups this season.
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, growing stronger organizationally under new executive director Harris Ferris, restores live music for two of its five productions this season, all but one at the Benedum Center, Downtown. The company opens its season with the most popular of the classic Romantic ballets -- "Swan Lake," with music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Oct. 27-29). Artistic director Terrence Orr's staging of the story of twin princesses Odette and Odile, one good and the other evil, vying for the love of Prince Siegfried will be supported by the Ballet Orchestra.

Often referred to as a man's playwright for dramas including "Glengarry Glen Ross," "American Buffalo" and "Speedthe-Plow," David Mamet focused on complex female characters with his 1999 comedy "Boston Marriage," which opens tonight at the Dayton Theatre Guild, 2330 Salem Ave.
Dating to the 19th century, the term "Boston marriage" refers to a long-term intimate relationship between two women who live together. Mamet's play, set in the Victorian era, is about genteel lesbians Anna and the younger Claire, who are on the verge of breaking up. Claire is smitten with a younger girl and hopes to seduce her while Anna entertains the girl's mother.
