  • I couldn't disagree more with the OpEd by Dan Crippen ("Internet sellers' free tax ride," BDN, July 5) in which he advocates taxing sales made through the Internet. Historically, sales made through the mail have been exempt from sales taxes unless you had a physical presence in the state the goods were being shipped to. With the development of the Internetthis was extended to Internet sales. The point is that Internet sales are still mail sales, you just order online instead of through a catalog.

  • A former director of the Congressional Budget Office recently provided the National Journal with enough dour thoughts on the state of Medicare to ruin anyone's pre-holiday festivities. Still, it's nice of him to spread the warning. Dan Crippen, former CBO chief and former domestic policy adviser to President Reagan, spoke with National Journal staff about the impending doom of Medicare, which for the first time this year will not collect enough in payroll taxes to pay for its Part A services, falling approximately $4 billion short.
