One moment, James DeLuca was digging a trench and the next moment, he was covered up to his waist in dirt and asphalt. DeLuca, an employee of J.T. Furrey Co. of Hamden, was part of a three-man team excavating for a sewer hookup in front of 399 Sackett Point Road Wednesday afternoon when the sides of the trench gave way and blacktop caved in, said Tom Brown, project coordinator.
