Under the snow that kept falling sporadically last week, grass, alfalfa and clover plants were breaking dormancy. In less than six weeks it will be time for the first cutting of 2011 to be made. Harvesting high quality hay or haylage is an excellent way to minimize the need for supplemental grains in dairy heifer or cow diets. Certainly current grain prices should encourage careful hay harvest. Just in time for that first cutting is a very nice bulletin, "Best practices to hasten field drying of grasses and alfalfa" from the University of Wisconsin. It is a particularly nice piece for new producers, younger members of the family or students as it clearly describes the drying process and how we can manage it and our equipment to maximize quality.
A genetically engineered growth hormone that makes cows produce more milk will be in short supply this year, giving some Maine dairy farmers hope that tight milk supplies will increase the market value of their product. The hormone, Posilac, is manufactured by St. Louis-based Monsanto Co., which last year sued Oakhurst Dairy of Portland for using labels that said the company's milk came from cows free of the hormone. This week, Monsanto announced that customers would get only half the Posilac they had previously purchased.

The United States' beef industry is down, but not out, after taking a hit from mad cow disease. Nearly two months after the U.S. Department of Agriculture said a dairy cow in Washington state had the disease, also known as BSE, beef producers are seeing lower prices for their cattle, but not a market collapse.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Farmer John Pagel said the 1,000 acres of dead alfalfa fields on his property are the worst winterkill he's ever seen. But the Casco-area farmer doesn't have time to commiserate - he had to get back on the tractor and replant the staple dairy cow feed. Just as Wisconsin farmers were rejoicing over sustained higher milk prices for the first time in years, many are suffering from unheard-of losses of alfalfa - a forage crop that along with corn silage makes up a major part of a cow's diet.

After two years of favorable milk prices, dairy producers are staring at a glass that's more than half-empty. Prices have fallen well below the cost of production. It's been bad before, but not this bad," said Bill Dolsen, president of The Dolsen Companies of Yakima, which includes the Cow Palace dairy in Zillah.
BRANDON, Vt. (AP) -- Fluctuating milk prices have long made dairy farming a risky business, and when milk prices crashed in 2002, Chris Lekberg gave up. He sold his cows and bought goats. It turned out to be a wise decision. He now has more than 50 goats, and with growing demand for goat cheese, he gets a steady price for their milk from a nearby cheese maker.
