While we tend to think of our cows' dry period as a vacation of sorts, she really is quite busy. During that dry period, lasting 60 days after the end of a lactation, (when she is no longer producing milk), her calf is busy growing. During this last two months of gestation her calf adds 60 percent of it's weight.
The transition period, or the three weeks before and three weeks after a cow calves, is an important time period for the dairy cow. Important in terms of her health at that time and for her future health and potential milk production. It is so important, that we actually study and talk about transition cow management.

robotic milking facts - For dairy herds in the 60- to 240-cow range, automatic milking systems might be competitive economically where labor costs or hired labor availability or frustrations are high. Robots sold in 2000 are supported and working effectively. - Automatic milking systems can be "free flow" with unimpeded access or "guided flow" with one-way gates to guide cows. - Automatic milking systems range from 140 to 190 milkings per 24-hour period or 2.4-3.0 milkings per cow/day. - Automatic milking systems range from 4,000 to 5,500 pounds of milk per-day. - The automatic milking system software assists in heat detection, rumination, somatic cell count levels, milk weights and individual grain feeding. - Automatic milking systems have been successful in freestall, bedded pac...

Its the worlds most popular meat, but youd be hard-pressed to find goat at the supermarket. Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough, authors of Goat: Milk, Meat, Cheese ($30, Stewart, Tabori and Chang), think this scrawny farm animal could become Americas healthy and sustainable alternative to beef. The new cookbook serves up more than 100 recipes plus tips for braising, roasting and grinding. Weinstein shares his thoughts on the Other Other Red Meat. Q: Why do you think goat is such a mystery in America? A: Despite being the most widely eaten red meat in the rest of the world, North America never really took to it. Goat doesnt lend itself easily to factory farming, so its not something that can be mass-produced, even though its popular elsewhere. Q: I...

The farmhand accepts her explanation, adding, "I'll feed 'em, I'll clean 'em, I'll give 'em bottles, but I won't do that." He turns away while [Annie Starvish] preps a large area on the animal's right side, soaping, shaving and disinfecting it before administering three shots of lidocaine, a local anesthetic. "I use a lot," Starvish explains. "I really don't want the cow to feel anything.
The Valleywide vets have their specialties. [Kent Anderson] works more with small family-owned dairies than the large milking operations that are replacing them. An Ohio State grad, he'll admit he's "partial to "pasture" and nostalgic for the old days when everybody helped the visiting vet. Don't mention James Herriott or his bestselling rural vet books, though. "He made it sound a lot more gla...

The best way to save dairy farms is through a political movement of dairy farmers, suggests NOFA's Rogers. He has some aed on this matter, having previously worked 28 years in the UVM animal science department as a conventional dairy cow specialist. "Historically, farmers have been price takers," Rogers says. "They've gotten screwed for a long time as a result. Milk producers need to be united and involved in marketing," he adds, observing that "organic dairy formers are no more united than conventional dairy farmers.
Ed Maltby, director of the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance, expects growth in demand to resume as the recession wanes. "It might not get back to 20 percent a year, but it should reach 10 percent," he says. Such an uptick .should enable organic dairy farmers to ...

On Dec 1, 2009, the Chicago Fed held a conference that examined issues shaping the future of Midwest agriculture, with a focus on public policy implications. This conference gathered experts from academia, industry, and policy institutions to discuss trends and possibilities for agriculture in the region and across the US. The goals of this conference were to explore factors that will impact the future direction of Midwest agriculture, particularly its composition and structure; examine the implications of the changing agricultural landscape for rural communities, as well as industry; and discuss the role that policies will play in guiding agriculture. A common theme was the opportunities for growth in Midwest agriculture while facing traditional and new challenges requiring innovative ...

The trial court abused its discretion in limiting the testimony of the plaintiffs expert, because there is legitimate disagreement about the scientific theory involved in the case, i.e., the extent of stray voltage required to adversely affect milk production. Accordingly, the trial court engaged in an unsound reasoning process and abused its discretion when it weighed the evidence and gave preclusive effect to certain scientific studies. The trial court also erred in rendering summary judgment on behalf of the defendant, as the evidence and the testimony of the plaintiffs expert, when properly admitted, establishes genuine issues of material fact regarding the claims against the defendant. Finally, the trial court erred in overruling a motion to limit the testimony o...
