What were the biggest news stories of 2011? Race cars zooming around the Inner Harbor? Potential promised (new development in Owings Mills) or potential unrealized (development in East Baltimore, the future of horse racing in Maryland)? Maybe it can be summed up in a word: Constellation; ICC; Ed Hale. Or "guilty" in the cases (literally) of Jack Johnson and Paul Schurick. Maybe it can be summed up in a number: $1.5 billion for Jacksonville residents in their lawsuit against Exxon Mobil, $100 million for BWI's expansion.

Solar leasing for homes announced Constellation Energy Group of Baltimore unveiled a solar panel leasing program for residential customers in Maryland and five other states. Constellation is offering a choice of a little-to-no money down or prepaid lease for a 20-year term. In Maryland, Constellation will offer residential solar sales and leasing through its BGE HOME subsidiary. Astrum Solar, an Annapolis Junction-based firm in which Constellation is an investor, is providing sales, installation and service support for Constellation's residential solar leasing program.
Choice's Cambria Suites spreads out Choice Hotels International Inc. of Silver Spring, announced plans for new Cambria Suites hotels in White Plains, N.Y.; Washington, D.C.; and Houston. Meyer Jabara Hotels, a Danbury, Conn.- based hospitality company, is building a 130-room Cambria Suites in White Plains as part of a $47 million mixed-use development. In Washington, Concord Hospitality Enterprises of Raleigh, N.C., and D.C.-based Roadside Development LLC are partnering to erect a 182- room Cambria Suites as part of CityMarket at O, a $300 million mixed- use development located by the D.C. Convention Center. Concord Hospitality also is developing a 127-room Cambria Suites near the Houston airport.

MedImmune expands Frederick plant Frederick city and county officials last week joined representatives of MedImmune Inc. to celebrate the official opening of a 337,000-square-foot addition to the biopharmaceutical company's manufacturing plant. The new space expands production capacity for products including Synagis, a drug that prevents a respiratory virus infection in high-risk children. Gaithersburg-based MedImmune employs about 250 people in Frederick and says it expects to add more. MedImmune, a subsidiary of London-based AstraZeneca PLC, develops and manufactures products to combat infectious disease, autoimmune disease and cancer.
Salisbury University celebrates newest residence hall Salisbury University officially cut the ribbon last Saturday on its largest building and newest residence hall. The 230,000-square- foot Sea Gull Square is a mixed-use development with retail businesses on the ground floor serving the campus and nearby community.
After half a billion dollars of investment, the latest hopes of success for The New East Baltimore project are housed in three humble trailers on what used to be the playground of a now vacant and vandalized city school. There, 207 students in kindergarten, elementary and middle school grades at the public East Baltimore Community School are being touted as symbols of the community's rebirth and held up as examples of the potential for its future economic success.
