PROVO -- A man accused of felony child abuse after taking his children to the Point of the Mountain, driving his car to the edge of a cliff and then telling the children they were going to "see Jesus" was sentenced to prison Tuesday. Christopher Young, 36, originally faced three counts of attempted aggravated murder and three counts of felony child abuse stemming from the April incident.
Tomorrow is Father's Day, but the days of "Father Knows Best" are long gone. Pop culture has unabashedly emasculated the image of fathers. In movies and on TV, dads are typically characterized as ignorant weaklings who are a burden and a joke to the women and children in their lives. The likes of Jim Anderson, Ward Cleaver and Cliff Huxtable have been replaced by Homer Simpson, Al Bundy and the loser on "American Dad. If fathers were really such ignorant slobs, society would be at full dysfunction. Strong fathers are essential to maintaining a free, prosperous and civilized society. Some children grow to succeed without the influence of fathers in their lives, but the statistics regarding fatherless homes are alarming to say the least. Fatherless homes are not likely to produce the num...
Some city law enforcement officers took a huge step in their support for Special Olympics. Police Chief Kelvin Wright and Undersheriff Jim O'Sullivan were among nearly three dozen who rappelled down the 250-foot-tall Main Street Tower in downtown Norfolk (see photo essay, Page 7). Sounds familiar. One afternoon while driving home from college, I noticed some kids hanging off a cliff that lined the highway. I wasn't surprised to see Dad at the top of that cliff. My father, a Boy Scout leader, was teaching his troops how to rappel for a jamboree at the University of Kentucky's Rupp Arena where some would rappel from the rafters.
When your wife says, 'Let's go,' you go!" he said. "Don't ask, 'Go where?" Don't you know that will only get-you into trouble? At my age, you learn to say nothing!' His Opera House performance was reminiscent of his portrayal of Dr. Cliff Huxtable, the lovable, all-American dad on the long-running sitcom "The Cosby Show," and of his earlier stand-up comedy days - he even ended the night with one of his famous routines, "The Dentist," popularized in the 1983 stand-up film "Himself."
Not everyone can be Dr. Cliff Huxtable, the quick-with-a-quip dad that Bill Cosby played on TV for eight years. But for the right price, you could dress just like him this Father's Day. Cosby's daughter, Evin , said her mother and father were cleaning out a closet recently when they came across a batch of the sweaters her dad wore when he played Huxtable on NBC's "The Cosby Show" from 1984 to 1992.
PUERTO IGUAZU, Argentina -- Darting past jagged rocks, our speedboat plays chicken with the widest waterfall in the world. I hold my breath as the driver veers straight toward the enormous cascade tumbling down from the cliff overhead. As we rapidly approach the Iguazu Falls, I shout to my step-dad that we're getting too close. Too late. The motorboat with its load of tourists is hurtling straight toward the towering curtain of mist.
ACCORDING to a Father's Day Harris Poll released last week, the TV dad respondents would liked to have had most while growing up turned out to be Cliff Huxtable of The Cosby Show. To me, the sweater-showcasing physician seemed unrealistically self-assured, capable of dispensing with the most sensitive of teen angst issues with a droll commentary delivered in the time it took to turn a page in the sports section.
DEAR ABBY: I am a confident, well-established administrative professional who has worked with an executive team most of my career. I organized a very large company party and, because my regular caterer didn't specialize in the kind of barbecue that was needed, I took a chance on an unknown one. I had never used this caterer but went on the recommendation of three colleagues I trust.
... the birth of our first child, I asked "Cliff" to allow me two weeks without overnight visitors ...
I am now perfectly OK with this. It's still very frustrating to me, but I'm very grateful for this journey I've been on.
