As Victor Aloyo, the Seminary's director of multicultural relations, says, "Christmas as a great festival has not only filled the world with gladness for many years, but it has also added to the customs and traditions of many nations. From the celebration of Loa Posadas in Mexico [a recreation of Mary on a donkey and Joseph searching for a room at the inn], to a festive, meatless Christmas Eve dinner with a special porridge called kutya in Russia, to the creation of the nativity scene in presepio in northern Brazil, Princeton Seminary's Carols of Many Nations provides a glimpse of these celebrations where our community can connect in this joyful and challenging time.

Our beloved New Mexico has been home to the Hispano people since 1598 on our paternal side and for thousands of years on our maternal side. The contributions New Mexico's Hispanos have made in advancing our great state are unparalleled, which distinguishes it from all others in the country. Hispanos have proudly contributed significantly in education, business, economic development, science and technology, cultural customs and traditions, medicine, politics, military leadership, exploration, the judiciary, athletics and so many other areas to include all branches of government.
Quite frankly, one can say that New Mexico would not be what it is today without the significant contributions of Hispanos. All these facts coupled with the vast beauty of our state make it a very attractive stat...

DON'T LET UP ON DRIVERS WITH CELL PHONES
I have to agree with Stanley Robb's March 7 letter, "Increase penalties." The cell phone law should not be scrapped. I've had a few close calls with drivers weaving in and out of traffic with cell phones pasted to their faces. There is no way their minds could have been on the road. The City Council must find a way to fund our police department to hire at least two traffic officers assigned to stopping these careless drivers. Issue them a DWD (driving while distracted) citation, record their names and license plate numbers and hit them financially harder on repeated cell-phone offenses.

New Mexicans are familiar with the stereotype about Mexican Americans and Hispanics -- that people who have lived here for generations have the same tastes and preferences as recent arrivals from Mexico.
But many of us are just as guilty of viewing Central and Latin American cultures as a homogeneous "Hispanic" mass, thus negating the rich diversity found in the customs and traditions of South and Central America.
