S. Customs and Border Protection agents at Miami's busy Air and Marine Branch received "vague intelligence" that a boat speeding west from the Bahamas and bound for Florida was carrying 100 kilos of narcotics.
Thirty miles south at the Homestead Air Reserve Base, a crew of four Air Interdiction and Enforcement agents - two pilots and two radar operators - pulled on their flight suits, threw bulletproof vests over their shoulders and scurried to board their Dash 8 aircraft, a sleek-looking, twin-engined, medium-range turboprop aircraft.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection department will dedicate a $20 million national training facility for its air and marine division at Will Rogers World Airport on Friday, officials said.

The pending transfer of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's air and marine operations division to U.S. Customs and Border Protection is being hailed by rank-and-file agents in both agencies as a positive move in the government's war on terrorism and its battle against illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Agents in field offices from Texas to California said the transfer, based on recommendations after a lengthy review by officials at the Department of Homeland Security, will consolidate into one agency helicopters, airplanes and boats now dedicated to air and marine law enforcement but split between two agencies.

HOULTON, Maine -- Officials with the Department of Homeland Security told members of Congress late last week that they plan to fly sensor-mounted unmanned aircraft along a greater expanse of the 5,500-mile border with Canada to spot illegal activity.
Even though the unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, are not yet patrolling in Maine, the announcement has the Congressional delegation watching the situation to see what the move could mean for the state.
