Perth, Australia-based Curtin University of Technology's internal audit staff was faced with a major problem in their control assessment process. The unit relies on a mix of systems, operational, EDP and compliance-based audits to administer a broad territory. However, its reviews of Curtin's 150 faculty and administrative areas, 50 university functions and 70 EDP-linked problems were constantly inadequate and infrequent despite these tools. Curtin's internal auditors discovered and adapted a University of Illinois-developed, Windows-based control assessment tool using the Microsoft Access database managing system. Curtin then installed the program online. The software provides a variety of useful features and has proven highly effective for the unit's control assessment requirements.

Most of what has been written or said about Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's departure from the Likud party describes the, event as an "earthquake," or the "eruption of a volcano," and that has, without a doubt, turned the Israeli political map "topsy-turvy," to borrow a phrase from Ha'aretz writer Gideon Samet.
While one can easily decipher the source of the upsurge in Sharon's reputation in the media as a rising "liberal politician" -- his decision to disengage from Gaza being the most obvious -- one cannot help but wonder whether Sharon's enthusiasts, who hurryingly registered his renewed commitment to the "road map" for peace in the region, were even aware of his concurrent decision to further expand three major illegal settlements in the occupied territories -- Maale Adumim, A...
