PORTLAND, Maine -- The planning board on Tuesday gave approval for the relocation of a shelter for homeless teenagers and runaways from a breaking-down apartment building at 65 Elm St. to a former office building a few blocks away at 38 Preble St.
The wide-ranging homeless advocacy group Preble Street -- which runs a soup kitchen, shelters and long-term apartments, among other things -- plans to renovate a 9,000-square-foot building at the corner of Preble Street and Cumberland Avenue to house organization offices and 24 emergency beds for homeless teens.

The Maine Golf Foundation was formed last year with the purpose of promoting golf and also putting all the golf organizations in the state under one roof at the Golf House at Val Halla in Cumberland, where the Maine State Golf Association headquarters is located.
It also took over The First Tee of Maine program, which is part of the national program, with the goal of creating new programs throughout the state with the help of golf pros and recreation directors.

Sixteen years ago, Mori and Carl LeFevre built their house next to the railroad crossing at Muirfield Road on the Falmouth- Cumberland town line.
They enjoy watching the freight trains that rumble by their sprawling single-family home near the Falmouth Country Club several times each day, Mori LeFevre said. Their two kids, ages 7 and 10, know they must stay away from the tracks. Sometimes the train whistles blow as they approach, sometimes they don't.
