At the most basic level communicators still make mistakes, misunderstanding local markets and cultural conditions. It's unfair, incidentally, that Americans often get bad press in Europe for lack of sensitivity towards other cultures. A passion for the local can be dangerous and divisive; but at its best it has produced a revival of minority cultures with extraordinary success stories, such as in Wales, Catalonia and Slovenia. The importance of understanding cultural differences in attitudes towards communication is why the Chartered Institute of Public Relations works so closely with the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, which has over 60 national PR associations in membership.
If you have felt confused about how you should deal with diversity in your laboratories, that is understandable, since there are at least three possible meanings of the term, and they each call for different treatment. The three types of diversity have to do with culture, identity and personality. Global business is already shaping common values and attitudes for its participants. But cultural differences can still add a lot of noise to communication signals. When you manage in America, you have to deal with a second meaning of diversity, identity groups or what might be more accurately termed identity politics. Identity and cultural diversity are often confused. The third meaning of diversity has to do with the personality differences the author has frequently written about. Like cultu...

Cultural variables influence the internal and external communication of multinational corporations. Cultural differences inevitably result in variations in the interpretations of the form of global communication program a multinational should take. Given this picture, these companies should avoid monolithic global communication that disregards the nationalities of their scattered workplaces and market. Any attempt to define a so-called 'common denominator' among the different cultures will always be rejected by nationalities as being insufficiently inclusive. For external communication, the viewpoints of international clients abroad should be understood so as to pinpoint important elements of a project. As for internal communication, the solution is to identify shared company values and...

The prevalence of substance use behavior and the personal characteristics and social and cultural factors that influence substance use among children have been studied extensively. However, much less attention has been directed at the attitudes towards, and particularly the perceived risks of, using substances, and even less research has focused on Hispanic youth, whose rates of substance use have been increasing. Understanding what factors are associated with perceived risk is important because there is evidence that perceived risk is associated with subsequent substance use. The current study uses longitudinal data collected from 553 children in the Cicero Youth Development (CYD) Project to identify individual and environmental factors associated with the perceived risk of substance u...

Geographically distributed design teams have become crucial, yet a significant number fail to accomplish their objectives. The reason is that long distances and cultural differences compromise working relationships, communications, trust, accountability, organization, individual contribution, and thus productivity. This paper analyzes eight such teams in the high-tech industry and discusses the most common issues/problems that surround them. These are categorized as technological, organizational and personal. An expert panel assigns a score to the problems and provides a set of recommendations that can improve productivity and minimize failure in such virtual teams.
Research has shown that managers spend a significant amount of time negotiating and that this trend will likely escalate in the future. Cross-cultural studies of negotiation tactics are needed as instances of international negotiations increase geometrically. This study analyzes the concession patterns of over 10,000 executives from 21 different nations over a 15 year period. Significant differences are found in the most and least preferred methods of concession. Implications for practicing managers are discussed in light of the results.
