Evo Morales is a polarizing figure in Latin American politics: a proudly left-leaning indigenous activist who defends the traditional rights of peasants to grow coca and describes the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas as "colonization." While opponents have labelled him a "narco-trade unionist," the charismatic Morales enjoys widespread popular support. As In These Times went to press, he was expected to win the special December 18 Bolivian presidential election. His election would place him in power alongside other Latin American leaders who are critical of America's neoliberal economic agenda: Hugo Chavez of Venezula, Lula de Silva of Brazil and, of course, Fidel Castro in Cuba.
MORALES' UPBRINGING SHAPED his political philosophy. The son of coca farmers, he was raised in the barre...

President Evo Morales, flanked by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage, visited Bolivia's coca- growing highlands yesterday to launch a campaign to extend his presidency.
Mr. Morales and Mr. Chavez were showered with rose petals as they arrived on an open truck with an impressive security display by combat-clad army troops and red-shirted Venezuelan and Cuban bodyguards.

Maria Morales-Prieto is descended from the Cuban political class: her great-great grandfather is Jose Miguel Gomez, the second president of Cuba, and his son Miguel Mariano Gomez was the 10th president of the island nation. Morales-Prieto, however, is very much "of the people." She owns her own public relations and marketing firm, and has made a name for herself as a Latina businesswoman. She took a moment to speak to us about her career trajectory.

People sure know we're here now," laughs [Blanca Padilla], the energetic force behind Mambo's Cafe. She's referring to the odd coincidence of having opened her restaurant almost a year ago, just about the time Sol Hernandez, owner of Puerto Rican hotspot Sol Food, transformed the once sedate corner of Lincoln and Third avenues into a bright, tropical oasis (or eyesore, depending on your view) prior to opening her larger outlet.
Padilla has commingled the cuisine of Puerto Rico, her country, with that of her husband Louis Morales's homeland Cuba. It's up to chef Freddy Yah, who's been cooking at Mambo's for most of its short tenure, to execute Padilla's authentic recipes. But make no mistake-Padilla is in the kitchen, too, cooking, tasting, overseeing. If she's not in the kitchen, she's...

American filmmaker Oliver Stone said Friday he deeply admires Hugo Chavez but suggested the Venezuelan president might consider talking a bit less on television.
Promoting his new documentary "South of the Border" in Caracas, Stone heaped praise on Chavez, saying he is leading a movement for "social transformation" in Latin American. The film features informal interviews by Stone with Chavez and six allied leftist presidents, from Bolivia's Evo Morales to Cuba's Raul Castro .
