JACKSON - Some say Mississippi's new felony animal-cruelty law is not doing the job. As an example they point to a hoarder discovered with about 200 dogs, many starving and reduced to skin and bones.

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. - A couple who ran an animal shelter was convicted on 20 counts of cruelty to animals, including abusing dogs sent from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Police found one dog dead, another with a broken leg, and many sickly others at Tammy and William Hanson's shelter, Every Dog Needs a Home. Twenty animals were found suffering from maggot infestations to severe skin conditions.
When Buffalo police found 11 dogs Thursday living in waste without food or water, they also discovered two pieces of equipment that may be even more disturbing. One was a "rape stand," which holds down female dogs so they can be raped to reproduce puppies that will be trained to fight. The other was a device used to strengthen a pit bull's jaw to lock onto a victim and hold the grip.

If found guilty, he could be fined as much as $2,000, serve a one-year prison sentence or be banned from owning animals, said Norma Worley, state animal welfare director.
Bullet is a sadly appropriate name for the playful puppy who escaped death a week ago after he and his brother were shot while running loose from their Washington County home. He's a very lucky puppy," said Marcia Rothaar, an officer for the Washington Area Humane Society, which has released Bullet into foster care. "We're not sure at all how it diverted and went out of his ear.
Two pit bulls -- exhausted from a violent fight -- clinch their badly bitten bodies against each other as spectators cheer for blood. A man from the crowd uses a long stick to pry apart the two dogs. The animals then retreat to opposite ends of the ring, where their owners attempt to incite more aggression. Pit bulls are said to have naturally sweet dispositions, but these have been trained to be killers.
