A Baltimore County lawyer and his wife will ask the Court of Appeals to throw out nearly $17,000 in restitution that was part of their sentencing on animal cruelty charges.
Hilton and Donna Silver initially pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty in Baltimore County District Court in August 2009 for neglecting one of the family's horses, which was so emaciated that county officials had it euthanized on the spot. Prosecutors agreed to drop charges involving the two surviving horses as part of the guilty plea.

A Baltimore County husband and wife were wrongly ordered to pay the costs of rescuing two of their horses, even though their criminal neglect of a third horse was so severe that the animal had to be killed, Maryland's top court unanimously held on Monday.
Hilton and Donna Silver were convicted of animal cruelty only toward the deceased horse, Calypso, and therefore had no legal culpability for the care of the other two horses, the Court of Appeals said.

MINNEAPOLIS - McDonald's and Target dropped one of the nation's largest egg suppliers after an animal rights group released an undercover video of the egg producer's farms in three states.
McDonald's Corp. said Friday it had dropped Sparboe Farms as a supplier after a video by the group Mercy for Animals showed cases of animal cruelty at five facilities in Iowa, Minnesota and Colorado. Target Corp. soon followed, saying it would pull eggs from the Litchfield, Minn.-based company off its shelves.
