BANGOR - Chris Maguire and Alex Gallant, two of the state's top athletes from the high school Class of 2007, imposed their wills on the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament Sunday, helping Brewer and Bangor earn return trips to the state championships.
Led by Maguire, fourth-seeded Brewer continued its dramatic run through the zone playoffs, rallying from deficits of 5-0 and 6-3 to upend top-seeded Trenton 8-7 in a winners' bracket game at the Winkin Baseball Complex on the campus of Husson College.

The Missouri River 340 boat race from Kansas City to St. Charles has been postponed because of high water and fast currents.
Race director Scott Mansker said he decided to reschedule the event for Aug. 24 after talking with the Coast Guard, Missouri Water Patrol and others along the Missouri River. By the time the race was scheduled to start next Tuesday, he said, the forecast indicated the river will be above flood stage and flowing at 4.5 to 5 mph -- at least 2 mph faster than usual.

At the state cross country championships in Pasco on Saturday, Hockinson's Sarah Porter finished slightly worse than last season, the La Center girls were about the same and Columbia River's Sarah Bobbe was a whole lot better.
Porter capped her high school cross country career with a fourth consecutive top-5 finish in the 2A race, the La Center girls were second among 1A teams for a second consecutive season and Bobbe improved 76 positions to finish fourth overall in the 3A girls race.

James River's Britta Grim is going to State 1A Cross Country
The Region C Cross country 1A cross country meet was held at Greenfield/Botetourt Sports Complex on Thursday, Nov. 5, under sunny skies but chilly breezes blowing across Tinker Mountain saw James River runner Britta Grim become the only county runner to go onto state competition. Grim finished 6th overall in the girls competition.
