  • PERQ/HCI's Journal Ad Review of specialty journals for the full year 2005 shows little respite from the slump that greeted specialty sectors in the first six months of last year. Only three of the eight specialty markets registered increases in advertising spending. Those reporting gains were led by ophthalmology (up 8%), followed by hospital management (up 7%) and nursing (up 2%). Of the five with losses, pharmacy had the biggest decline (down 9%), followed by laboratories (down 6%). Others that declined were off 1%-2%. Ad spending in radiology journals dropped by 2% during 2005. In 2004, this segment had a loss of 7%. After registering a marginal gain of 1% during the first half of 2005, spending in dental journals ended the year with a 2% decline, following a 7% increase during 2004.

  • During the first half of 2005, only three of the eight specialty markets audited by PERQ/HCI's Journal Ad Review reported increases in ad spending, with the remaining five registering losses. The frailty in specialty markets is further confirmed by the fact all eight sectors recorded a decrease in actual number of ad pages compared to the first half of 2004. Spending in pharmacy journals for the first half of 2005 declined by 6% versus last year, even as a number of newly introduced products received strong advertising support. After recording by 9.3% growth during the first six months of 2004, spending in optometry journals was down 4.5% for the first half of 2005. Ad spending in dental journals increased by just 1.4% over the first half of 2004, even as many new products were introduc...

  • Five of the eight specialty markets tracked by PERQ/HCI's Journal Ad Review (JAR) reported higher ad spending during 2003. The strongest growth was observed in nursing (24.1%), followed by radiology (10%) and pharmacy (8.7%). The 4.4% increase in hospital management and the 3.7% gain in ophthalmology reverse two years of losses for both segments. The good news for the three markets that saw a decline is that losses were relatively low. Dental was down just 0.7%, laboratory declined 2.5% and optometry fell 4.1%. Ad spending in nursing journals continued to show exceptional growth, as evidenced by a 24.1% gain during 2003. In 2002, this market registered an increase of 14.6%. Since all but one of the top 10 advertisers is involved with recruitment/staffing, it is quite clear that there co...

  • During the first six months of 2007, five of eight specialty markets audited by PERQ/HCI's Journal Ad Review (JAR) reported increases in ad spending. The 0.2% increase in ad spending for pharmacy journals during the first half of 2007 continues the positive trend that began during the first sin months of 2006 when spending grew by 4.5%. After recording a 3.2% decline during the first half 2006, ad expenditures in optometry journals increased by 2.7% during the first half of 2007. During the first half of 2007, ad spending in ophthalmology journals increased by 2.4%. This gain follows a 21.3% increase in the year-ago period. Ad spending in dental journals grew by only 0.7% during the first half 2007. This gain follows an increase of just 0.3% during the first six months of 2006.
