The Ebony Guild, a charitable and service organization was organized in 1981 by Beatrice Lacy Davis, Dr. Carol Williams Spigner and Dr. Floraline 1. Stevens, two social workers and an educational researcher They were on the board of directors of the Crittenton Center and noticed that there were no African American women's groups serving the Center, although one-third of the population was African American young women living in the Center. A call to action was made to women in the community who wanted to give service. These women were present and recognized at the luncheon as the charter members were Natalie Battersbee, Gwendolyn Bosley, Dr. Barbara Lake, Shirley Miller, Judy Morgan-Phillips, Gladis Smith and Dr. Laura Wiltz, who remain as active members.

WASHINGTON, March 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Gilbert Arenas, a 28-year-old member of the NBA's Washington Wizards, was sentenced today in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia to an 18- month suspended prison term and placed on two years of probation for a felony charge of Carrying a Pistol Without a License, announced U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Cathy L. Lanier. Arenas received the sentence this afternoon before Judge Robert Morin, who also ordered that Arenas spend 30 days in a halfway house as a condition of his probation, complete 400 hours of community service, and pay a fine of $5,000. The Washington Wizards continue to monitor the free agent market, hoping at some point to land an affordable backup big man. But Saturday, coach Flip Saunders and team president Ernie Grunfeld will turn their attention to preparations for the NBA Summer League, which begins Friday in Las Vegas and runs through July 19.
Because the Wizards traded their first- and second-round picks in last month's draft, this year's team won't feature a big-name prospect. Instead, the squad will be led by third-year veterans Nick Young, Dominic McGuire and Javaris Crittenton, as well as center JaVale McGee, who's entering his second season with the Wizards.
