City police officers are excited about proposed new cruisers with more powerful engines and braking systems than the older Crown Victorias they are used to. For the past few years the city has purchased rear-wheel-drive Crown Victorias for the department, Chief Brent Webster said. This year theyre going to get something a little different a police edition of the Ford Interceptor. Charleston Council will vote today on the purchase of 12 Interceptors and three Explorer-type sport utility vehicles. The total price tag for all 15 vehicles is $408,432. The 12 cruisers will cost $323,472, and the SUVs will run $84,960, said Lt. T.L. Malone, police department support services commander.
