WASHINGTON - The Justice Department has begun a criminal investigation into mortgage giant Fannie Mae, which has been accused of earnings manipulation and ordered to revamp its accounting, it was learned Thursday.
An accounting crisis emerged last week at the embattled government-sponsored company, which is the largest financer of home mortgages in the country.

Earlier this month, Eggleton was promoted to assistant chief of detectives within the Charleston Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division. He was appointed by Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper to help out with casework and to be a media liaison.

The chairlift derailment at Sugarloaf that injured eight people does not require a criminal investigation by his department, Carrabassett Valley Police Chief Scott Nichols said Tuesday.
Nichols announced his conclusion in a phone interview Tuesday after the town Police Department, which has ties to the ski resort, released its report on the Dec. 28 incident. It's unclear what role the document could play in potential lawsuits against Sugarloaf.
