A county prosecutor in Cincinnati reportedly is trying to decide if it would be appropriate to file criminal charges against some participants in the melee that erupted several seconds before the end of a basketball game Saturday between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University.
We've no doubt an able prosecutor could make a case for criminal charges -- assault and battery, and disorderly conduct appear to be under consideration -- but don't think they should be filed in this case.

Authorities arrested a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Thursday on suspicion of breaking into his ex-fiance's house, threatening her boyfriend with a gun and punching him while off- duty last year.
Reymundo Lainez, 42, of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of felony counts of burglary, assault with a firearm and making criminal threats, as well as a misdemeanor count of battery, Los Angeles County District Attorney's officials said in a written statement.

Carol Angela Bare, 41, is charged with arson, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, domestic assault, domestic battery and destruction of property, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) has announced the Illinois statewide crime rate index rate fell .3 percent in 2008. Reports of arson realized the largest decrease while burglary, murder and robbery showed a marked increase.
Index crimes compiled by the Illinois Uniform Crime Reporting Program are comprised of offenses considered to be the most prevalent and apt to be reported to law enforcement agencies. The eight index crimes include both crimes against persons (murder, criminal sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated battery and aggravated assault) and crimes against property (burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson).

A semitrailer driver from Salina who rammed vehicles, forced cars off the road and led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase during a three-county rampage that started late Thursday in western Shawnee County was being held without bond Friday in the Pottawatomie County Jail in Westmoreland.
The semitrailer driver, identified as Robert Smith, 55, was being held in connection with attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and criminal damage to property.

MORGANTOWN - OnStar helped State Police nab a suspected drunk driver who said he ran his car into a ditch and called the in- vehicle emergency service for a tow truck Monday, a criminal complaint said.
William C. Dulin, 68, of Broomsage Road, was arrested for DUI, assault and battery.

Charges are expected to be filed Tuesday morning against a Salina tractor-trailer rig driver suspected of ramming vehicles, forcing cars off the road and leading law enforcement officers in a high- speed chase, said Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat.
Riat said he was told by Pottawatomie County Attorney Sherri Schuck that she was preparing formal charges to be filed against Robert Lee Smith, 55, who currently is being held in the county jail in lieu of $250,000 bond after he was arrested early Friday in connection with attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and criminal damage to property.
