The Senate Wednesday passed its version of a bill to make graffiti a crime under state law (SB408). Under the bill, which passed the Senate 33-0, graffiti would become the 59th crime against property in state law, and people convicted of defacing property could face penalties of up to one year in jail and fines of up to $10,000.
Some residents of Columbia's Old Southwest neighborhood are planning to become a little more nosy in an effort to keep their homes safe. Historic Old Southwest Columbia Neighborhood Association residents gathered last night to discuss concerns about recent burglaries and larcenies, and some left with more conviction to be aware of what is going on around them. Columbia police officers who patrol the area told residents the neighborhood -- generally southeast of the intersection of West Boulevard and Broadway -- is among the city's safest, despite occasional rashes of break-ins. But even one crime against property is too many, resident Hank Ottinger said, and residents want to be informed.
CERRITOS -- Residential crime is up in Cerritos -- and authorities are taking action. Officials at the sheriff's Cerritos Station recently deployed a newly formed Residential Burglary Team to fight against property crime.

Real estate owners, managers and residents will gather Thursday at the Parkade Center for the second annual Columbia Property Managers Against Crime Summit.
