CRETE - Things didn't start very well for the Bloomington High School football team Saturday afternoon and they certainly didn't get any better as the day wore on. On the second play from scrimmage of their Class 6A first-round playoff game, Purple Raiders quarterback Jayden Thompson hit Davin Biggs with a screen pass, but Crete-Monee's Nyles Morgan forced a fumble at the Bloomington 22-yard line, and Tracy Whitehead scooped it up and raced untouched for a score.
When Joann Birurakis opened the Best of Crete restaurant 27 years ago in Charleston Town Center, a casual observer might not have given good odds for her success. The Greek immigrant spoke little English, had no restaurant experience, not much money and was peddling ethnic food not well known to many Charleston diners. Today, patrons patiently stand in line to buy gyro sandwiches, souvlaki platters, stuffed grape leaves and baklava. Her son Michael took over the business seven years ago, but Joann still cooks and helps several days a week.
NORMAL - Normal Community High School's well-traveled basketball team is in familiar surroundings after journeys to Bradley- Bourbonnais for the regional and Moline for the sectional. Next up is a 10-minute bus ride, if that, to Redbird Arena for tonight's Class 4A Super-Sectional against Crete-Monee. Junior guard Anthony Beane knows the way better than anyone.
Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber and his players and staff were at the Illini football game Saturday, entertaining recruits. By the time the weekend ended, Weber had received another commitment. Michael Orris, a 6-2 point guard from Crete-Monee, told Weber he will attend Illinois after he graduates in 2012.
