When Antonio Lawton heard the sirens blare March 11, he realized that something wasn't right. Crescent City tests its tsunami warning system on the first Tuesday of the month. This was a Friday. Every first Tuesday of every month at 10 in the morning, the sirens go off. It's just a test," said Mr. Lawton, a commercial fisherman who has lived here for 27 years. "I said, 'Well, this ain't a warning.'
The story here is the spirit of New Orleans - its culture and the post-Katrina struggle to maintain its unique jazz roots in the [Treme] district in the face of gentrification, well-meaning but insulting tourist interest and cases of devastation where there's little hope of recovery. City leaders in New Orleans showed they grasped an important principle when they chose to increase fees for garbage collection to what it actually costs the city to pay for the services. With tolls on the Crescent City Connection set to expire at the end of 2012, it's time state lawmakers and transportation officials learn the same lesson.
CRESCENT CITY - Initial cleanup efforts were completed in the inner boat basin of the northwest California city's harbor last week, and officials began planning the next phase of rebuilding after a tsunami from Japan decimated the harbor on March 11. S. Coast Guard crews, who spent the last month removing boats and debris from the harbor while mitigating pollution effects to the immediate area, left the area late last week.
We are nearing the end of the longest possible Carnival season and that means many steaks must be eaten for one of two reasons: if you follow local tradition most strenuously or you love steaks. In its 17-year history this is the most exhausting year the foundation has faced, as a result of Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans and surrounding areas. "We have served 900 emergency cases since the hurricane.
