The chickens are coming home to roost, or something. Whatever the appropriate metaphor, both Christiansburg and Blacksburg are considering allowing backyard chickens. It is a bad idea.

The trend is part of the whole locavore, organic, hormone- free, sustainability movement that has gained chic credibility nationwide in recent years. Websites and online communities are devoted to encouraging people to raise chickens in urban areas.

The dominant model of regulation in the United States for consumer credit, insurance, and investment products is disclosure and unfettered choice. As these products have become more complex, consumers' inability to understand them has become increasingly apparent, and the consequences of this inability more dire. In response, policymakers have embraced financial-literacy education as a necessary corollary to the disclosure model of regulation. This education is widely believed to turn consumers into "responsible" and "empowered" market players, motivated and competent to make financial decisions that increase their own welfare. The vision created is of educated consumers handling their own credit, insurance, and retirement planning matters by confidently navigating the bountiful unrestr...

The Washington Times reports that the U.S. Central Command paid San Diego firm Ntrepid $2.7 million for the software. It makes American special operations forces using it appear to be logging in from appropriate spots anywhere in the world, enhancing the credibility of those fake personas in terrorists' eyes.

You don't curl up next to a fireplace with a computer to read a feature story, but you might do that with a magazine.
The decision to beef up the website comes at a time when a handful of enthusiast websites native to the Internet have raced ahead to lead the online pack. The competition has a good start, but there is room for everybody, Uttle explains. "For the brand we don't have anywhere near the traffic we should and we're looking to fix that," he says. "We're looking to leverage the credibility of our brand onli...

Courts have yet to reach a consensus on the proper standard for distinguishing among bloggers with respect to shield laws-statutes that prevent the compelled disclosure of confidential sources. This note questions the prudence of standards that base protection on how closely bloggers imitate the institutions whose authority they are challenging.

Derek Roy has enough issues. The Buffalo Sabres' center has a balky shoulder that will likely keep him out of the lineup tonight in Toronto for the second straight game, he's on pace for his worst offensive season in six years and he's getting plenty of blame from fans for the team's continued struggles.
Now there's this: Roy is the hottest name in the rumor mill if the Sabres make a trade.
