There are plenty of ways to celebrate the beginning of the autumn season, but in Washington and Greene counties, it's a long-standing tradition to start the season visiting one of the area's historic covered bridges.
Known as a signature event to kickoff the fall harvest of festivals and fairs, the 39th annual Covered Bridge Festival is set for Saturday and Sept. 20.

The Washington and Greene counties Covered Bridge Festival will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today, rain or shine.
There will be demonstrations, exhibits, special events, activities, arts and crafts, live entertainment and food. The event is spread across 10 locations from Ebenezer to White.

Washington and Greene Counties' 40th Annual Covered Bridge Festival is Saturday and Sunday.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, eight bridges in Washington County and two in Greene County will host the event. Admission and parking are free.

Democrat Andre Carson had a 5,000-vote lead over Republican Jon Elrod out of nearly 59,000 votes counted. With 88 percent of 445 precincts reporting, Carson had about 53 percent of the vote compared with about 44 percent for Elrod.
In Indiana, District 7 is predominantly Democratic and Carson had a large fundraising advantage over Elrod, along with more than $150,000 in spending by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee onn Carson's behalf.

Pennsylvania has been called the Covered Bridge Capital of the World because of its many surviving covered bridges.
And 21 of those can be found in Washington County, and seven are located in Greene County.

Since the early 1900s, White Covered Bridge in Greene County has spanned Whitely Creek on Roberts Run Road.

MILTON - Jessica Spence and her 5-year-old son, Wesley, emerged from a wall of green, both smiling. Their smiles grew when Milton Corn Maize co-owner Joyce Cooper told them they were the fastest to get through the maze so far. Granted it was the first weekend, but the Spences were pleased, particularly because they had beaten Jessicas husband, Ernie, and Wesleys sister, 9-year-old Lilly. The chance to parachute from a Southern West Virginia bridge 876 feet into a tree-covered valley draws thrillseekers from as far away as Norway and China. Yet the Bridge Day festival is struggling to fill all the slots on the only day the jumps are allowed each year.
Jump organizer Jason Bell of Bridgeport believes the reason is competition from sites in other states and countries where BASE jumping is legal, some for free. That might reduce the lure of having to pay to glide to the bottom of the New River Gorge during a small six-hour window at this year's Oct. 20 festival.
