A significant change in the constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will permit people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender to be ordained as ministers, elders and deacons.
The outcome of the long-debated controversy is the result of a vote taken on May 10 by the Twin Cities presbytery, which includes Minneapolis and St. Paul. That vote gave the required majority to a General Assembly amendment passed on July 8 that deleted language related to standards of ordination requiring officers to "live either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness.
