If you have to ask how much a ticket in Topeka's Municipal Court costs, you probably can't afford it. People who have to go to court for speeding tickets and other city code violations were already outraged at the court cost of $61 that they had to pay in addition to a fine. This week the Topeka City Council made it worse.
Carol Wright doesn't think she was driving over the speed limit the two times she was given a speeding ticket in Gauley Bridge. I had slowed down already for the railroad track," Wright, of Pittsboro, N.C., said of her first ticket. "My mother had wanted to stop at the store, so I slowed down for that. There was no way I was speeding.

I personally think it's somewhat of a double jeopardy," he said. "A fine for the traffic ticket should be the deterrent to doing it; you shouldn't have to pay insurance costs on top of that. At the same time, however, he wants to make sure repeat offenders don't get off the hook too easily, so he urges, his peers to look at the Dearborn and the state's court records before making a judgment. [Mark Somers] recalls one incident in which a Dearborn man was found to have committed nine impeding traffic violations in a span of about two years. He was placed in front of five different magistrates and one judge but none of the magistrates recognized that he had been in so many times before. Somers has told police officers to make sure they use their best judgment when they're out on patrol a...

The Regulatory Flexibility Act requires that agencies publish semiannual regulatory agendas in the Federal Register describing regulatory actions they are developing that may have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities (5 U.S.C. 602). Executive Order 12866 ``Regulatory Planning and Review,'' signed September 30, 1993 (58 FR 51735), and Office of Management and Budget memoranda implementing section 4 of that Order establish minimum standards for agencies' agendas, including specific types of information for each entry. The Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions (Unified Agenda) helps agencies fulfill these requirements. All Federal regulatory agencies have chosen to publish their regulatory agendas as part of the Unified Agenda. Edi...

The Oklahoma City Council considered funding options Tuesday for the renovation of the city's police headquarters and municipal courts complex. The cost of speeding tickets could be increased to cover a shortfall of about $12 million. Council members directed city staff to move forward on plans to build new police department offices south of the current building at 701 Colcord Dr. and a new court building north of the site, at a projected cost of nearly $50 million. General obligation bonds issued in 2007 will cover about $37 million of the total project, leaving a balance that would need to be covered by MAPS 3 use taxes, another G.O. bond authorization or increased court fees for specific traffic violations - the total ticket cost for speeding 1 to 10 mph over the posted limit could i...
