We've all been there: standing on the grocery store line watching the person in front of us fumble with 30 coupons, then fight with the cashier when one didn't ring up properly to give back 10 cents. Hey, she spent hours meticulously cutting hundreds of coupons from the Sunday newspaper and filing them into that coupon organizer, and she wants to make that effort worthwhile. But who hasn't wanted to reach into their own wallet, offer up the dime and move on with the afternoon? These days, though, that smug attitude will only get you gigantic grocery bills and a shake of the head from those in the know.
Dear Sun Spots: On Feb. 16, I mailed an order for 1 Deluxe Coupon Organizer with a money order for $10.99 to a company named Hannah Hansen. I do not have Internet so someone checked for me Hannah Hansen's Web site in April, which stated there were medical issues and the company would fulfill all remaining orders. They would be selling the company or closing down. On May 12, a friend sent an e- mail to the company and it was rejected saying that the hotmail account was closed. There was no phone number listed and the money order has not been cashed as of May 12. I would like my product or the money back; if I cancel the money order it would cost me double. Is there any possible way Sun Spots can help me with the problem or am I out $10.99? - No Name, Jay. Answer: Unfortunately, Sun Spots...
Catherine Artman My first thought upon seeing the KouponKeeper was, "Why didn't I think of that?" This coupon organizer is a spiral notebook filled with clear-plastic pages with pockets. Some pages have baseball card- size pockets, but I prefer the ones with four pockets (usually for 4- by 6-inch photos) or with two (for 5-by-7s). The latter is best, because I can fan out a handful of coupons and slide them all into one of those big half-page pockets. All of my pet-related coupons, for instance, are in one pocket. Now when I buy litter, I can flip to that page and quickly see whether I have a Tidy Cat coupon. It beats frantically flipping through a stack of coupons. I'm not wild about the bright blue cover, because the organizer is conspicuous as it is. I guess the Keeper has "outed" me...
I'll admit I was skeptical when the padded envelope containing a List Caddy crossed my desk here at Home. But, being a devoted coupon- clipping queen who inspires dread among supermarket cashiers, I vowed to try the organizer and shopping cart helper on my next trip to Kroger. As an avid player of The Grocery Game (www.thegrocerygame.com), which helps shoppers match their coupons to supermarket sales for the biggest-possible savings (more on this in a later HomeStyle), I've developed my own well-honed coupon-organizing system with a large and durable canceled-check holder with 16 pockets. List Caddy wasn't what I'd expected from the PR people's description, but it was worth a whirl if it promised to make life easier at home and while food shopping.

When Eve Johnson was a graduate student, she started clipping coupons to help manage her tight budget. Yet even now, 20 years later, the Upper St. Clair resident swears by coupons: She even buys several Sunday newspapers each week, and organizes her coupons with a binder system at home. I'm good at it, but I've attended a couple of couponing classes, just to see if they can teach me something I don't already know," says Johnson, 44. "I've been doing it for so long, it's second nature.

Seattle native and Northwest music historian Peter Blecha shares his true-life adventures in search of pop culture antiquities in his new book, Rock and Roll Archaeologist, from Sasquatch Books. As the former curator of the Experience Music Project museum in Seattle, Blecha took his record collecting interests to stratospheric new heights, scouring for rock 'n' roll treasures like [Bob Dylan]'s first guitar to Janis Joplin's paisley pants and pink feather boa. Highlights include the auction chase for Eric Clapton's "Layla" guitar and gaining Kurt Cobain items from a difficult Courtney Love. Got grunge? How about the original chipped and crusty Superfuzz stompbox that defined Mark Arm's signature guitar tone in Mudhoney? From chasing the wild report of a tree that naturally casts an eeri...
