FRANKLIN - Franklin Ellsworth Whitley, 90, passed away Dec. 14, 2010 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was born in Southampton County, a son of the late Garnet E. and Naomi Hedgepeth Whitley, and was predeceased by a brother, Garnet E. Whitley Jr. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater and had retired from Union Camp Corporation. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, the VFW, the American Legion, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and was a charter member of the Bronco Federal Credit Union.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 69 years, Lessie Faison Whitley; a daughter, Linda W. Barnes of Roper, N.C.; a son, Randall M. Whitley and wife Carolyn of Franklin; a brother, Bertram M. Whitley and wife Joy of Savannah, Ga.; a sister-in-law, ...

WINDSOR - Clarence Thomas "Samie" Whitley, 79, passed away Dec. 31, 2010. He was born in Isle of Wight County the son of the late Telzie Carr Whitley and Clarence Edwin Whitley. He served his country in the Unites States Air Force. After a long working history he later went on to retire from the maintenance department at Gwaltney's. He was a member of Pine Grove Assembly of God.
Clarence is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha G. Whitley; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Wangerin of Suffolk, Jackie and Don Carr of Windsor; grandchildren and their spouses, Shannon Graffam (Jay), Doug Nabors (Kate), Joshua Nabors (Mandy), Jacob Tynes, Kristy Bryant (Adam), Thomas Steele Carr (Haley); great- grandchildren, Jordan, Connor, Brady Graffam, and Braydon Bryant.

Whitley has made it her mission to preserve the history of the farming industry, barns, the people who built them and the stories surrounding them in Summers County. In a way, she is chronicling a slice of West Virginia farm life.

COMO - Richard Oscar "Dick" Whitley, 68, of the 800 block of Statesville Road, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.
Mr. Whitley was born in Hertford County, a son of the late Richard Gilbert and Sadie Mae Burbage Whitley. He was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church and was a former member of the Como Ruritan Club and Murfreesboro Jaycees. As a young boy and man, he was a member of the Como 4-H Club, receiving many honors in district, state and national competitions including a national winner in peanuts with a trip to Chicago. Dick was owner and operator of R.O. Whitley Inc., a farm supply dealer, for 27 years.

A federal appeals court this week upheld a Pittsburgh judge's dismissal of a Braddock man's malicious-prosecution lawsuit against Allegheny County.
Drew Whitley served 17 years in prison before DNA testing cleared him in 2006 of the 1988 murder of Noreen Malloy outside a McDonald's restaurant in Duquesne. U.S. District Judge Joy Flowers Conti dismissed the lawsuit in March, ruling that Whitley had failed to prove that he was maliciously prosecuted.

SOUTH WHITLEY, Ind. - A state agency has confirmed discoveries of the emerald ash borer in more spots in northeastern Indiana, bringing to at least 14 the number of counties in the state infested with the tree-killing pest.
The insect has been found near the southern Whitley County town of South Whitley and in northern Wells County, both within 20 miles of Fort Wayne, the Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday.

LOT, Ky. - A man armed with a rifle shot his way into a southeastern Kentucky home Wednesday, killing one and injuring three others, authorities said.
Teddy Keith Hurst, 40, was charged with murder and three counts of attempted murder, Whitley County Jailer Ken Mobley said. He was being held in jail.
