A city of semis appeared out of nowhere on a hillside here a few weeks ago, all working in tandem with machinery that reached more than a mile deep into the earth's surface to lay claim to a piece of Pennsylvania's economic future. It's a scene appearing again and again in two of the four corners of the Keystone State, in the valleys southwest of Pittsburgh as well as these rolling hills in Tioga County 35 miles south of Corning.

Two local anglers with experience in big tournaments were leading the standings in the North East Ice Tour after one event. Mike Kuna of Pittsburgh and cousin Bob Griffith of Vandergrift - last year's tour champions - finished in first place on the tour's first stop of the season, at Beechwood Lake in Tioga County, and sit atop the ice fishing tourney's points board.
When Dan Rabold of Denver heads to his Tioga County hunting camp later this week for deer season, he and fellow hunters won't be able to drive certain dirt access roads to penetrate into state forest land like they used to. A few of the roads near his camp in Tioga State Forest have been closed since spring because of drilling for Marcellus shale natural gas.
