A prominent Platte County lawyer fighting a DWI charge is taking on a series of statutes he says are inherently unfair to defendants.
James D. Boggs was cited for driving while intoxicated on Jan. 23, 2011, and charged criminally the following May. In the meantime, the Missouri Department of Revenue sought to revoke Boggs' driver's license for allegedly having refused to submit to a blood alcohol test.

Mary Kay Schwope, 94, of Wheatland died Oct. 18 at Platte County Memorial Nursing Home in Wheatland.
She was born July 21, 1917, in Rock Springs.

A Kansas City municipal judge was cleared last week of charges that she was not a full-time resident of the city.
Judge Elena Franco was suspended in August following accusations that she spent most of her time at the Platte County home of her husband, attorney Rick Holtsclaw.

Gov. Jay Nixon has appointed attorney David C. Christian, of Kansas City, as Platte County assessor.
The previous assessor, Lisa Pope, died in March. Nixon named Christian to the job yesterday.

A Platte County judge has awarded $5 million to the family of a 22-year-old woman killed when a driver sped 150 mph and rear-ended the car in which she was traveling.
The judgment of $3 million in actual damages and $2 million for aggravating circumstances is largely a symbolic win for the woman's family, said Quint Shafer, the plaintiffs' attorney. He said the parties agreed beforehand that defendant John McNamara and his family would pay plaintiffs Patrick and Diana Cockrill $300,000, no matter the judgment amount.
