DUMONT -- The borough will dedicate a recently upgraded intersection in honor of Matthew Joseph La Porte, a borough resident who was among the 32 victims killed in the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech. The Borough Council this week unanimously adopted an ordinance dedicating the intersection of Washington, New Milford and Virginia avenues in La Porte's memory.

Flags in Matthew La Porte's hometown of Dumont flew at half- staff on Wednesday. Flowers were left on the front stairs of his childhood home. Friends took their grief to the Internet, flooding online memorials with photos and heartfelt goodbyes. The mourning for La Porte intensified two days after the Dumont native died during a gunman's rampage at Virginia Tech University, in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

A rugged, 1,080-acre tract of forest adjoining Mount Porte Crayon and Thunderstruck Knob has been added to the Monongahela National Forest through an agreement between The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service. The Nature Conservancy bought the Randolph County property in June 2010 from Thunderstruck Conservation LLC, and held the tract until federal funds were available to transfer the property to the Monongahela National Forest.

The street in Dumont where Matthew La Porte lived weaves through one of those familiar American neighborhoods of split-level homes with basketball nets on driveways and daffodils in trim gardens and families who dreamed of something better for their kids. The way LaPorte died this week at Virginia Tech is all too common in America, too.
