Jo Daviess County is in a difficult financial situation. The negative change in our national and state economies has now reached us here. Even though there are signs that the economy in general might improve, the local economy does not look as hopeful. Last year, during preparation of the current 2004 fiscal year budget, the sheriff's office was threatened with reductions that would cut jobs. All county departments faced reductions, and we were already working under a "no frills" budget. We have continued to work hard to find cost-saving measures and additional revenue resources. Unfortunately, planning and preparing for fiscal year 2005 and beyond shows these measures will not be enough. We need to act promptly for public safety.
Every three months, you can find a group of individuals meeting at the Jo Daviess County Health Department in Galena. These individuals are regular citizens of Jo Daviess County that have a common goal: to make residents more aware of the obesity problem that exists around them. GALENA, Ill. - Jo Daviess County tourism officials are heralding figures released by the state of -Illinois, saying they confirm that tourism is a revenue-generating multimillion-dollar economic engine for the county. According to the Illinois Office of Tourism, Jo Daviess County ranks 15th out of 102 counties in overall visitor spending in 2010, with tourism generating 1,650 jobs and a payroll of $33.1 million. That spending generated $8.85 million in state tax revenue and $4.33 million in local taxes.
