It's 5:50 p.m. when the four Baltimore County Circuit Court judges arrive at the Vista Room at the Maryland State Fairgrounds to start their second job. Judges Jan Alexander, Sherrie Bailey, Ann Brobst and John Nagle are running as a slate in the upcoming election, seeking full 15- year terms on the court. Circuit court judges are the only members of the state judiciary who face a popular vote.
Judges have given St. Louis County's Domestic Violence Court a vote of confidence. The circuit court's judges voted unanimously last week to continue the court, which segregates protection order dockets for intimate partners from other protection orders.
Critics of an injunction to stop a series of abortion restrictions from taking effect are questioning how and why the case was assigned to three Maricopa County Superior Court judges. The first two judges removed themselves from hearing the case - one was vacationing out of the country and the other gave no reason. The third judge, who came out of retirement to take the case, issued an injunction on Sept. 29 that put the laws on hold.
The four sitting judges seeking election to the Baltimore County Circuit Court apparently have been claiming political endorsements they do not have. Some politicians listed in advertisements as supporters of Judges Robert E. Cahill Jr., Judith C. Ensor, Timothy J. Martin and Mickey J. Norman said yesterday that they do not endorse the sitting judges' slate.
SAN BERNARDINO - Extra benefits that are being paid by the county to Superior Court judges, who are state employees, could be near an end. The Board of Supervisors will look at whether to stop the county- paid judicial benefits to more than 70 judges, and save the county about $1.5 million a year, at its meeting Tuesday.
Each month, the six Monroe County Family Court judges meet with Family Court Supervising Judge Raymond Cornelius to discuss substantive and procedural issues. On Thursday, Dec. 16, their meeting was conducted at the Monroe County Bar Association with an audience observing. James Grossman, MCBA president-elect, facilitated a question and answer session immediately following the judge's meeting. First on this month's agenda was a report by Monroe County Family Court Judge Gail Donofrio about National Adoption Day and the local events organized by Judge Marilyn O'Connor and Judge Donofrio. (Judge O'Connor unfortunately missed the Nov. 19 Adoption Day ceremonies due to illness, and also missed Thursday's meeting as she is still on the mend.)
In an effort to ensure that DWI repeat offenders get into treatment as quickly as possible, the Jefferson County Circuit Court has agreed to include DWI court screening as a condition of their bond. At the court en banc meeting June 13, Jefferson County Assistant Prosecutor Rebecca Grosser said that sometimes it takes as long as six months before a potential candidate for DWI court enters the program.
Judges in the St. Louis Circuit Court signed off on a plan to help out their neighboring court in St. Louis County with civil trials and family law cases. The city's court en banc gave Presiding Judge David Dowd approval late Thursday to proceed with a plan for city judges to help out the county on a case-by-case basis.
