RIDGEFIELD -- Borough Council members commended each other for working together -- a rare moment in a town where the political atmosphere has been contentious. Two councilmen are challenging the mayor for his seat on the board. And discussion by residents at Monday night's meeting revolved on the perceived lack of bipartisanship on the council, and the "vicious" nature of politics in the borough.

BERGENFIELD -- After years of uncertainty, the Borough Council could finally decide to move ahead with designing a community center in Memorial Park, or it could scrap the project altogether. Council President Christopher Tully said the body plans to vote on the issue next month.
The Teterboro Borough Council voted unanimously Wednesday to begin negotiating with the Bergen County Police Department for a new contract to patrol the northern section of the town, which has been covered since 1996 by Little Ferry police. The police service contract with the county would begin Jan. 1, Mayor John P. Watt said.
Westwood Borough Council President Robert Miller asks residents and officials to pray to "the God who has entered your heart'' at the start of government meetings. Pequannock officials seek guidance from the "most gracious Providence." And official meetings in Wayne and Norwood begin with a moment of silent reflection. Leading off meetings with some type of prayer has been a long- standing tradition for many North Jersey governing bodies. But Pequannock recently asked its attorney to review the practice in response to a lawsuit brought against Point Pleasant Beach, which started its public business by reciting the Lord's Prayer.
The incoming president of the Dumont Borough Council accused the newly elected mayor of offering a quid pro quo for political favors at a reorganization meeting Tuesday night that devolved into a shouting match. The council president, Kenneth Freeman, delivered a nine-minute speech in which he alleged that Mayor James Kelly, a fellow Republican, had privately urged him to vote in a slate of borough professionals in exchange for removing Freeman's name from a pending lawsuit against the council.
EMERSON -- The Borough Council met Thursday with members of the library's board of trustees, looking for answers. What they got was more confusion. Frustrated by a lack of disclosure about the library's ongoing $465,000 renovation project, the council summoned the library director and trustees to Thursday's meeting.
