Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, who is wrapping up an eight-month investigation into the Fiesta Bowl scandal, will ask lawmakers to overhaul the state's lobbying laws, saying financial reporting requirements are confusing and out of touch with what he believes the public demands of its elected officials.
If it's too much of a burden for an elected official to keep the public informed ... they shouldn't be in office," the county's top prosecutor told the Arizona Capitol Times. "If you don't want to do this, then go do something else.

Monroe County District Attorney Michael C. Green is not the only one frustrated with the judicial nomination process. His lack of confirmation means the courts will continue struggling to meet a growing caseload with fewer active judges.
This will have a serious impact on the business of the court," said Judge William M. Skretny, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York who was hoping Green would be available soon to fill a seat held by Judge David G. Larimer.

Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Kanatzar will serve as the Jackson County Circuit's newest judge, Gov. Jay Nixon's office announced Thursday.
Nixon had 60 days to make the call, but the speedy announcement came roughly two weeks after a local nominating commission submitted its picks to the governor.

The two candidates for Monroe County district attorney seem to agree on more than they disagree and both have plans to tweak how the office is run.
The debate Monday between Bill Taylor and Sandra Doorley was mild compared to their television ads, with each talking about their experience, plans and why they are the best candidate. Questions, submitted by judges and attorneys prior to the event, were put to the candidates by local attorney James C. Moore, serving as moderator. Written questions were also taken from the floor.

The nomination of Monroe County District Attorney Michael C. Green for a federal judgeship is on the agenda Thursday for an executive business meeting of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
A committee spokesman said committee rules allow for any first- time agenda items to be held over for one week. That has happened with most, if not all, nominations considered by the 112th Congress since the beginning of the year.

El Paso County Attorney Bill Louis wants to join the fight against a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of Colorado's Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, arguing TABOR is good policy and the lawsuit could erode state power.
Louis said Wednesday that he will ask county commissioners at Thursday's meeting to authorize his office to "intervene" in the case, which was filed Monday in U.S. District Court.

Former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas will not get a day before the Arizona Supreme Court. The Court without comment refused to hear a set of appeals that Thomas, who is running for attorney general, made to overturn rulings he lost involving a State Bar ethics investigation.
Thomas' spokesman, Jason Rose, sent a written statement that said the decision allowed "a political witch hunt to continue.
