BANGOR, Maine -- A motion made and seconded to accept the donation of a content management system by a company co-owned by Bangor Councilor and Mayor Cary Weston quickly led to disagreement and debate among councilors.
The motion, made at the end of Monday afternoon's finance committee meeting, was to vote on the approval of the donation of software valued at around $7,000 by Sutherland-Weston Marketing/ Communications of Bangor for use by the city as part of its redesigned website.

Former Oregon Gov. Barbara Roberts last week was sworn in as Metro councilor to fill the District 6 seat vacated by Robert Liberty earlier this year.
Roberts has been in politics for more than 35 years, starting when she filled a vacated seat on the Multnomah County Commission in 1974. She has since served as Oregon Secretary of State, and later as governor from 1990 to 1994.

Longtime Freeport Town Councilor Rich DeGrandpre's bid for re- election in November is being challenged by other candidates' supporters who say his nomination papers weren't properly witnessed or notarized.
Council Chairman James Cassida collected voter signatures for DeGrandpre, a councilor-at-large, at a Sept. 11 memorial event, according to the challenge notice filed last Tuesday by Peter and Sandra Thompson of Freeport. The council held a special meeting Wednesday on the Thompsons' allegations and will continue reviewing the matter at 6:30 tonight.

MILLINOCKET Environmentalist and millionaire businesswoman Roxanne Quimby should create her own park on the 70,000 acres she wants to donate to the National Park Service to show whether the concept can work, one of her proposals leading critics said Friday.
Town Councilor Mike Madore, who spoke out against the park plan at a meeting with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar at Stearns High School on Thursday, said he worried that Quimby's refusal to take no for an answer was undermining the political process.

Tulsa City District 3 Councilor Roscoe Turner expressed disappointment that the city of Tulsa and surrounding citizens within the Tulsa city limits weren't given a chance to protest a hazardous waste permit for the Lafarge Cement plant.
The city of Tulsa sits on the edge of dirty air," Turner said during a press conference Monday at City Hall. In addition to Turner, District 1 City Councilor Jack Henderson and District 6 City Councilor Jim Mautino attended the press conference to voice their concern of the possibility of more hazardous emissions in the environment.

Vancouver City Councilor Pat Campbell is seeking a backer on the council to help him put a discussion of a citywide vote on the Columbia River Crossing on the agenda.
With C-Tran likely pushing a vote on a sales tax for operations and maintenance of light rail on the CRC to next year, Campbell said a nonbinding advisory vote this November might settle it a little bit.

HOULTON - A former town councilor who failed in a previous bid to secure a seat on the SAD 29 school was appointed to a seat Monday evening to fill a vacancy caused by a resignation.
During a brief council meeting Monday evening, councilors chose Paul Cleary, a Houlton resident and former councilor, over three other candidates for the seat. Cleary, who tried unsuccessfully to win a seat on the board in 2009, has served several terms on the council, including time as chairman.

AUBURN -- City Councilor Eric Samson said he's prepared to resign from the City Council for good because he is attending the Maine Criminal Justice Academy through Dec. 16.
I've talked to the mayor about it, and I'm happy to resign if that's what needs to happen," Samson said Thursday.
