AUGUSTA - He waited and waited. For more than four hours, Greenville Town Manager John Simko waited Thursday to discuss a unique cost-sharing proposal with a commission studying the delivery of services to the unorganized territory, but he never got the opportunity.
NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Higher Education Commission agreed Tuesday to support a plan that would have colleges and universities pay part of the cost for campus construction projects and also requested approval of a five-year capital program that totals $1.8 billion. Commissioners in a telephone conference call Tuesday agreed to send the plan to Gov. Bill Haslam and state finance officials, but did not have a quorum to formally act on the proposed capital outlay for the fiscal year that starts in July 2012 and the five-year plan.
Brookfield -- The mayor might have been willing to pick up some of the Town of Brookfield's tab to get a road widening project done, but aldermen were not so amenable. With the Greenfield Ave. widening nearing completion except for a half-mile segment left at two lanes due to disagreements over the town's fair cost share, Mayor Jeff Speaker threw out a proposal this week:
Columbia Board of Education members say they're interested in reviewing the district's policies regarding school resource officers in light of the ongoing controversy stemming from a Hickman High School fight. Hickman school resource officer Mark Brotemarkle is under internal review after some questioned whether he responded too aggressively when breaking up a fight between two girls last month.
Superintendent John Deeder will host a live webcast on Thursday, June 30, to share his cost-savings plan for Evergreen Public Schools. At stake are the fate of classroom teacher positions, school librarians, fifth-grade music and middle-school athletic programs, some high school counselors and dozens more potential targets.
Tepe Park Neighborhood Association President Mary Kixmiller might speak for a lot of city neighborhoods when she says, "We've got a lot of bad sidewalks. She's one of a number of neighborhood officials and local residents expected at a meeting Saturday where city officials will explain a cost-sharing plan for sidewalk repair and replacement.
A plan to bring a trolley back to downtown was derailed by aldermen Monday night over concerns the city can't afford the matching funds needed for the project. The Board of Aldermen rejected a city request to apply for and accept an $800,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration to study the idea of installing a rail system and having a trolley to take people to key places, such as the hospitals and the train station. The plan called for a $200,000 cost share from the city, which several aldermen adamantly opposed.
Finance officials' error last year in estimating the city's liability for firefighters' pensions might wind up costing $5.5 million over 30 years. The Colorado Springs City Council agreed unofficially Monday to a deferred retirement plan under which firefighters can retire at 50 and continue working for five more years while also receiving their pension.
[Nelson Peltz]'s solution is to raise share prices now, with a massive cost-cutting plan that would likely entail sizable job cuts. Peltz also wants seats on Heinz's 12-member board of directors for himself and four others - all of whom have dose ties to Peltz. Heinz has rejected Peltz's previous efforts to install supporters on the board. So Peltz is waging what's called a "proxy fight," in which an outside party tries to gain control of a company by appealing directly to its shareholders [see sidebar, "Squeeze Play"]. I don't think [this] thing has any chance of being settled with just a couple weeks to go," says CMU's [Robert Dammon]. "Plus it's gotten so nasty, I couldn't see Heinz say, 'OK, two or three of these guys would be acceptable.' "If Trian was out for the shareholder, th...
