CENTERVILLE -- Centerville Finance Director Mark Schlagheck, who has taken issue with some findings in the Wade Steen financial study of Washington Twp. and Centerville commissioned by the township, questioned why Steen singled out The Golf Club at Yankee Trace to revalue in its analysis of the assets and liabilities of the two entities. All capital assets are recorded at historical cost (purchase price)," Schlagheck said. "Based on historical cost, the municipal building has a net value (less depreciation) of $113,000. Either all assets should be revalued or they should all remain at historical cost. Consistency is important," he said.

Thirty years ago, economist Charles Kindleberger published a little book, Manias, Panics, and Crashes (New York, 1 978), describing the normal tendency of capitalist financial markets to fluctuate between speculative excess (or "irrational exuberance" in the words of a recent central banker) and panic. Millicent Rogers Museum does it right Organizations that sponsor art exhibitions as fundraisers would do well to emulate Taos' Millicent Rogers Museum. The museum's 2008 Miniatures exhibition (through March 31) is an event characterized throughout by grace rather than greed. From the outset, artists submitting works to help raise funds for the museum were treated with consideration and respect. Due to a family emergency, I had to be out of town during the time submissions were being accepted. I was allowed to drop off my work early. The work was juried, but the museum did not charge an entry fee. Proceeds from sales were shared, with 65 percent going to the artist, 35 percent to the museum. There is a technology shift going on right under our feet, and it may be the first one for some generation Xers. We recently put a proposal together for a good client at the coast to design the reconstruction of about 1.25 miles of roadway. We got several proposals from surveyors to perform the surveying, and the best value (and lowest price) was a stationary laser survey. Like all technologies, the initial cost of entry has been fairly steep. But as it gains acceptance and shows value, the costs have come down. The almost photographic data density will likely cover any needs to resurvey for missing data.

LIVERMORE - Town officials have negotiated a deal to buy a 2010 International truck with an integrated dump body and sander, along with plowing equipment for $108,300. That price factors in trade-in value of a 1999 truck and the final cost may be lower if the truck sells for more than the allotted trade-in value in a direct sale through a bid process, select board administrative assistant Kurt Schaub said Thursday. The "Cost vs. Value" article published annually by Remodeling Magazine gives consumers a look at the average price - and the return on investment - of all the most popular types of remodels. In 2005, the word was that the average return on a remodeling project was in the high 90 percentile. At the same time the average cost of a kitchen remodel nationwide was $108,000.
